AUSTIN – Texas Trucking Association (TXTA) today released the following statement regarding filed and reserved bills addressing abusive lawsuits against owners and operators of commercial vehicles in Texas.
"SB 17, SB 207, HB 19 and HB 1617 are a significant step in the trucking industry’s fight to end lawsuit abuse. TXTA applauds Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and Speaker Dade Phelan for their leadership in prioritizing lawsuit reform in the trucking industry this legislative session. The combined support from leadership in both chambers sends a strong message to those that have taken advantage of loopholes in the legal system—it’s time for abusive practices that plague our legal system to end.
TXTA is advocating for fairness and accountability in the courtroom. Abusive lawsuits are driving up the cost of insurance and literally driving companies out of business. For Texas to be able to continue to thrive, trucks must be able to continue to move. The trucking profession is a critical piece of the supply chain and Texas’ economy.
Truck drivers set out daily on the same roads their loved ones and our loved ones travel with one thing in mind—safely delivering the essential goods Texans and Americans rely on. We thank the legislature for their consideration of this legislation and stand ready to assist."
