AUSTIN – Texas Trucking Association today released the following statement regarding the passage on third reading of House Bill 19 by the Texas House of Representatives:

“House Bill 19 is not just a trucking bill, it is a Texas bill. It’s not only trucking companies that are hurting from abusive lawsuits, but any company that operates a commercial motor vehicle. For far too long, some trial attorneys have preyed upon these businesses and today the legislature stood up and said it’s time for change. TXTA applauds Chairman Jeff Leach (R-Plano) for his unwavering support of this legislation and thanks Speaker Dade Phelan for his leadership as House Bill 19 made its way through the Texas House of Representatives. In addition, thank you to Leo Pacheco (D-San Antonio), Rep. Eddie Lucio III (D-Brownsville) and Rep. Ina Minjarez (D-San Antonio) for bringing bi-partisan support to the bill.

TXTA looks forward to working with the Texas Senate to restore integrity to our courtrooms, while also protecting the rights of those injured in an accident to a fair and transparent trial. This bill has never been about denying compensation to those that have been injured—we whole heartedly agree that when an operator has acted negligently, they should be held accountable. While the focus of this legislation is the courtroom, TXTA and its members are committed to ensuring safety is the top priority for all drivers.”
